Wax is naturally produced in the External Auditory Canal (EAC), it is a mechanism to collect dust and has antibiotic properties. A build up can be caused over months or sometimes years by a naturally occurring excess of earwax, narrow or hairy ear canals, and the use of objects like the use of cotton swabs or hearing aids that can push wax further in.
